Summary

Travel time perception plays a central role in shaping individual route choice, mode preference and broader urban mobility trends. Despite advances in data analytics and real-time monitoring, travellers frequently overestimate or underestimate journey durations, leading to mismatches between perceived and actual performance of transport networks. Psychological factors such as temporal relevance and uncertainty interact with the spatial characteristics of street and transit infrastructures, giving rise to systematic biases in mode choice. At the city scale, these perceptions influence public policy, infrastructure investment and the shift towards more sustainable modes. Integrating behavioural insights with multimodal traffic data is therefore essential to design networks that respond to both objective performance and subjective experience, with implications for congestion management, equity of access and decarbonisation strategies worldwide.

Recent studies have fused real-time road traffic feeds, public-transit schedules and social-media-based demand estimates to evaluate travel-time disparities between private cars and shared modes across major metropolises. Analyses in four global cities reveal that public transport journeys typically take 1.4 to 2.6 times longer than equivalent car trips, with only a negligible fraction of urban areas where transit is faster. Temporal profiling shows that this disparity persists through peak and off-peak periods, stabilising to roughly double car travel time for mid-distance commutes. Such integrative frameworks offer more realistic assessments of network performance, informing policy measures aimed at reducing car dependency and improving the competitiveness of public transport.
