Urban Agricultural Dynamics in Food Security

Urban agriculture has emerged as a critical component in the global quest to bolster food security amidst rapid urbanisation. Encompassing a range of activities from rooftop gardens and vertical farms to informal allotments and livestock rearing within city boundaries, urban agriculture contributes to improved nutritional diversity, reduced food miles and increased resilience to supply‐chain disruptions. In many metropolitan regions, community‐led initiatives are integrating modern technologies such as hydroponics and aeroponics alongside traditional practices to optimise resource efficiency and crop yields. These developments intersect with socio‐economic drivers, urban planning policies and environmental considerations, highlighting the potential of urban agricultural spaces to generate income, foster social cohesion and mitigate urban heat‐island effects. However, contextual factors such as land tenure, water availability and regulatory frameworks vary considerably across regions, influencing the scale and stability of urban agricultural enterprises. As cities expand, strategic integration of agriculture into urban design and infrastructure planning offers new pathways to enhance dietary quality, reduce waste and support local economies, thereby strengthening the resilience of urban food systems against climate change and economic shocks.

Recent studies have applied large‐scale genomic tools to monitor crop‐variety adoption in settings where urban and peri‐urban farming plays a growing role. An extensive DNA fingerprinting exercise in a major sub‐Saharan wheat landscape revealed that many farmers within urban fringe areas had adopted high‐yielding, disease‐resistant bread wheat varieties, substantially boosting productivity. This approach provided an accurate benchmark for policy makers to assess varietal turnover and support targeted interventions. Findings demonstrate that integrating molecular diagnostics into agricultural surveys can transform our understanding of crop dynamics in rapidly urbanising regions and guide investments in seed systems that underpin urban food security.
