Summary

Corvids are a highly adaptable family of birds that exploit the structural complexity and resource availability of urban landscapes when selecting nest sites. Key factors influencing nest site choice include the presence of tall trees or anthropogenic structures that afford protection from predators and human disturbance, the proximity of reliable food sources such as refuse sites or parklands, and microhabitat features that moderate temperature and precipitation. Urban nest sites often occur at greater heights and in coniferous or evergreen plantings, reflecting a trade-off between safety and ease of access. Variation in nest-site selection arises from interspecific differences in tolerance of human activity, territorial behaviour and social-hormonal factors governing breeding synchrony.
