Vaccine Cold Chain Management in Public Health

Effective vaccine cold chain management underpins the success of immunisation programmes worldwide by preserving the potency and safety of thermally sensitive biological products from manufacture to administration. A cold chain is a temperature-controlled supply chain that encompasses storage, transportation and handling, often covering multiple logistical stages—from national depots through regional stores and outreach clinics to the point of administration. Key challenges include maintaining stable temperatures in resource-limited settings, mitigating the risk of freezing or overheating during transit, and ensuring trained personnel adhere to protocols. Recent advances in passive cooling devices, real-time temperature monitoring and data analytics have enhanced the ability to detect and rectify excursions in near real time. In parallel, efforts to strengthen governance, workforce training and integrated pharmaceutical logistics systems have addressed operational gaps, particularly in remote and underserved areas. These innovations collectively aim to reduce vaccine wastage, improve coverage equity and ultimately contribute to global health security by enabling rapid, reliable immunisation responses to endemic and emerging infectious threats.
