Video-Feedback Interventions for Parenting and Child Development

Video-feedback interventions comprise structured programmes in which parent–child interactions are filmed and subsequently reviewed with a trained practitioner. Drawing on attachment theory and social learning principles, these interventions aim to enhance parental sensitivity, supportive presence and sensitive discipline. By enabling caregivers to observe and reflect on their own behaviour alongside expert feedback, video-feedback can consolidate positive parenting strategies, foster secure attachment bonds and reduce externalising behaviours in early childhood. Evidence to date demonstrates benefits across diverse settings, including routine health services, foster care, adoptive families, psychiatric inpatient units and community home visits. Innovations such as first‐person cameras and prenatal ultrasound feedback have extended applicability to naturalistic and even prenatal contexts. Common outcomes include improved dyadic synchrony, heightened parental confidence, reductions in parental stress and modest to moderate gains in child socioemotional functioning. Practical advantages include relatively brief delivery, adaptability to different risk groups and potential cost‐effectiveness when integrated into existing services. Remaining challenges centre on engagement among reluctant caregivers, tailoring to cultural contexts and sustaining effects over the long term. Current work emphasises the importance of practitioner skill, parental acceptability and the interplay between intrapersonal change and observable interactional shifts.

Attachment security: A characteristic of the child–caregiver relationship marked by the child’s confidence in the caregiver’s availability and support when distressed.
