Viral Interactions in Periodontal Disease
Summary
Periodontal disease arises from a complex interplay between host tissues, bacterial biofilms and resident viruses, notably members of the herpesvirus family. Viral pathogens such as Epstein–Barr virus, human cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus can infect the gingival epithelium and periodontal ligament, perturbing local immune surveillance. Infection often remains latent but may reactivate under inflammatory conditions, amplifying tissue destruction by inducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Viral–bacterial synergy enhances pathogenicity: viral infection promotes bacterial colonisation and vice versa, driving deeper pocket formation, alveolar bone loss and compromised tissue regeneration.
