Volcanic Systems and Magmatic Processes in Subduction Zones
Summary
Subduction zones host some of the most dynamic volcanic systems on Earth, driven by the descent of an oceanic plate beneath a continental or another oceanic plate. Fluid release from the downgoing slab induces partial melting in the overlying mantle wedge, producing magmas that ascend through the crust to form volcanic arcs. As magma rises, it interacts with crustal rocks, evolves through fractional crystallisation and assimilation, and may stall in mid‐crustal reservoirs before eruption. The architecture of these plumbing systems—from deep mantle sources and slab‐derived metasomes to shallow magma chambers and conduits—controls eruption style, duration and hazard. Monitoring advances, including seismic, geodetic and geochemical methods, now capture transient phenomena such as reservoir recharge, dome growth and lateral magma transfer between vents. Understanding these processes is essential for assessing volcanic risk in densely populated arc regions, for modelling global geochemical cycles of volatiles and metals, and for interpreting the long‐term evolution of continental crust through arc magmatism.

Long‐term photogrammetric analysis of Bezymianny volcano has documented seven decades of post‐collapse edifice regrowth, revealing shifting vent locations and a transition from dome clusters to a focused stratocone. Numerical models attribute this vent migration to changing stress regimes as the volcanic load evolves. Complementary seismic tomography combined with satellite radar and petrology at the same volcano identified closely spaced low‐ and high‐Vp/Vs anomalies at 2–3 km depth, interpreted respectively as magma and gas reservoirs in the days before an explosive eruption. High‐resolution mapping of thermal anomalies in the Klyuchevskoy Volcanic Group using infrared satellite imagery demonstrated that adjacent volcanoes exhibit coordinated eruptive behaviour via hydraulically linked crustal plumbing. This interplay modulates magma output rates for years, indicating that volcanic clusters cannot be treated as isolated systems when assessing eruption likelihood and hazard.
