Summary
Waterbirds play a pivotal role in the movement of aquatic organisms across landscapes. Through processes of endozoochory and ectozoochory, these avian vectors facilitate the transfer of seeds, algae, invertebrates and even fish eggs between isolated water bodies. Internal transport occurs when propagules survive gut passage and are later egested at new sites, while external transport relies on attachment to plumage or feet. It also influences the spread of alien and weedy species, with implications for invasive-species management and agricultural biosecurity.
