Summary

Wetlands represent some of the most productive and species-rich ecosystems on the planet, offering vital services for water filtration, flood control and carbon storage. They also provide critical breeding, foraging and migratory stop-over sites for a multitude of bird species, many of which are of conservation concern. However, wetland habitats have been degraded or lost worldwide through drainage, pollution, peat extraction and altered hydrological regimes. Effective management seeks to restore natural water levels and vegetation structure, enhance habitat heterogeneity and balance human use with conservation goals. Measures include controlled grazing, rotational mowing, selective reed cutting, prescribed burning and manipulation of water depths. These actions aim to maintain open water patches, mosaics of emergent vegetation and ephemeral mudflats that support diverse avifauna. Collaborative approaches involving landowners, local communities and conservationists are increasingly adopted to reconcile socioeconomic needs with the long-term resilience of wetland bird populations.

Technical terms

Wetland: A lowland area saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, providing specialised habitat for diverse flora and fauna.

Reedbed: A wetland community dominated by tall emergent grasses (often Phragmites australis) that serve as nesting, feeding and roosting sites for birds.

Habitat heterogeneity: The variety and arrangement of physical and biological features within an ecosystem that support a wide range of species and ecological processes.

Brood parasitism: A reproductive strategy in which one bird species lays its eggs in the nest of another, relying on the host to incubate and rear its young.

Ecological trap: A scenario where animals preferentially settle in poor-quality habitats due to misleading environmental cues, resulting in reduced survival or reproduction.
