Summary
Wildlife trafficking—the illegal taking, transport and trade of wild animals and their derivatives—poses one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. Driven by demand for luxury products, traditional medicines and exotic pets, trafficking networks exploit governance gaps, defy national borders and erode ecosystems. Beyond its erosion of species populations, illicit wildlife trade undermines local livelihoods, funds organised crime and heightens the risk of zoonotic spillover. Contemporary conservation strategies are shifting from solely enforcement-led approaches towards integrated models that combine regulatory frameworks, community engagement, market-based incentives and technological innovation. Regulatory instruments, such as trade quotas and bans under international agreements, remain fundamental, but their effectiveness is amplified when paired with improved population monitoring, transparency in supply chains and demand-reduction campaigns. Community-based stewardship and benefit-sharing arrangements create local incentives to protect rather than exploit fauna, while advanced analytical tools—from machine-learning analyses of commercial filings to network mapping of trafficking routes—offer early-warning of emerging market pressures. Sustainable-use paradigms advocate for scientifically validated harvest protocols and proof of sustainability prior to authorisation of legal trade. Interdisciplinary collaborations among ecologists, economists, social scientists and enforcement agencies are critical to adapt interventions to socioecological contexts and to disrupt resilient illicit networks without unintended harm to legitimate trade or local communities.

Complementing this, an approach using the global threatened-species inventory has mapped gaps in international trade regulations, showing that a substantial fraction of species at risk from trade remain unlisted under existing conventions. Such work has refined priorities for extending trade measures to overlooked taxa. Foundational analyses of web-based markets for under-regulated groups, notably reptiles, have also exposed that a majority of traded species and individuals are wild-capture, underscoring critical shortcomings in current monitoring and the need to require proof of sustainability before permitting trade in newly described or range-restricted species.
