Women's Career Development and Transition Strategies
Summary
Women’s career development encompasses the processes through which individuals acquire skills, experience and social capital to advance within or between occupational roles. Transition strategies address the challenges and opportunities encountered when moving across stages such as entry, promotion, career change, career break and re-entry. Research has shown that structural barriers—ranging from organisational cultures and labour-market segmentation to caregiving responsibilities and implicit bias—intersect with personal aspirations to shape women’s trajectories. Effective development strategies combine formal interventions (mentoring, sponsorship, leadership training) with informal networks and social support. Transition strategies often involve negotiating flexible working arrangements, cultivating resilience to career shocks and leveraging platforms for peer exchange. Globally, initiatives such as returnship programmes, remote-work policies and targeted networking events have demonstrated practical impact, while digital tools are accelerating access to coaching and skill-building. A holistic perspective recognises that fostering authenticity, balance and challenge at different life stages can sustain long-term engagement and talent retention.
