Summary
Work disability management encompasses systematic approaches to prevent, assess and address work incapacity arising from injury, illness or chronic disease. Central to effective management is the integration of early identification of risk factors, stakeholder engagement and tailored interventions that support an individual’s functional capacity. Return to work (RTW) strategies often draw on the biopsychosocial model, recognising that biological, psychological and social factors interact to influence recovery and reintegration. Key components include workplace accommodations, phased or modified duties, coordinated communication among healthcare providers, employers and insurers, and self-management support for workers. Multidisciplinary interventions—combining occupational therapy, vocational counselling and clinical treatment—have shown consistent benefits in reducing absence duration and sustaining employment. Policy environments, organisational culture and supervisor support further shape outcomes, with evidence highlighting that proactive sick leave policies, occupational health services and reintegration planning can improve both the speed and stability of RTW. As national populations age and chronic diseases grow more prevalent, effective disability management and RTW approaches are critical to maintaining workforce participation, reducing social security costs and promoting individual well-being.
