Summary
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) encompass a spectrum of inflammatory and degenerative conditions affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and spinal structures. These disorders arise from a combination of biomechanical exposures – such as repetitive motions, forceful exertion, awkward postures and whole-body vibration – and psychosocial factors including high job demands, low control and insufficient social support. Globally, WMSDs remain a leading cause of disability, absenteeism and diminished quality of life, with incidence peaks in manufacturing, construction, agriculture and the service sector. Epidemiological studies reveal that low-back pain, shoulder disorders (including subacromial impingement and rotator cuff syndromes) and upper-limb tendinopathies account for the majority of cases. Risk profiles vary by gender, age and occupation, emphasising the need for gender-sensitive analyses and age-specific interventions. Integrated prevention strategies combine engineering controls, ergonomic redesign, administrative measures (job rotation, work–rest scheduling) and multi-disciplinary health programmes. Advances in exposure assessment, such as job exposure matrices, have refined our understanding of exposure–response relationships, enabling targeted risk reduction. The global burden underscores the imperative for whole-system approaches that bridge research, workplace practice and policy to preserve musculoskeletal health and sustain labour participation.

Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS): A shoulder condition characterised by compression of rotator cuff tendons beneath the acromion, leading to pain and limited mobility.
Rotator cuff syndrome (RCS): Pathology affecting the group of tendons stabilising the shoulder joint, often linked to repetitive overhead activity and biomechanical overload.
