Summary

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) among sonographers represent a significant occupational health challenge, characterised by high prevalence rates in the neck, shoulders, wrists and lower back. These conditions arise from a combination of repetitive hand movements, prolonged static postures and high scanning volumes. The design and adjustability of ultrasound equipment, the need to maintain image quality and patient comfort, and limited opportunities for recovery all contribute to mechanical overload of muscles and tendons. Psychosocial factors such as time pressure and limited decision latitude may exacerbate physical strain, while individual characteristics including body stature and prior pain history further modulate risk. WRMSDs not only impair the health and well-being of sonographers but also threaten service quality and workforce retention, underscoring the need for ergonomically informed practice, targeted training and organisational measures to mitigate risk.

Psychosocial factors: Work-related organisational and interpersonal conditions, such as job demands, social support and decision latitude, that influence stress levels and may contribute to physical symptoms.

Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD): A condition affecting muscles, tendons, nerves or supporting structures, often arising from work-related physical or psychosocial exposures.

Ultrasound transducer: A handheld probe that emits and receives high-frequency sound waves, requiring repetitive gripping and precise positioning during scanning.
