Summary

Youth engagement in organised sport exhibits a complex interplay of personal, social and environmental influences that shape initiation, maintenance and withdrawal. Participation typically peaks in mid-childhood before declining through adolescence, with marked differences by gender, socioeconomic status and geographical region. Intrinsic motivation, enjoyment and perceived competence drive sustained involvement, while competing academic demands, logistical constraints and diminishing parental support often precipitate dropout. A socio-ecological perspective highlights how individual attitudes toward physical activity interact with family encouragement, peer group norms, institutional provision and broader policy measures to determine patterns of entry and exit. Recent advances in predictive modelling, informed by psychological constructs such as autonomy support and learning interest, have improved our capacity to identify at-risk individuals and tailor interventions. Globally, fostering a positive motivational climate and ensuring equitable access to facilities and skilled coaching remain central to reversing declining trajectories and maximising health and developmental benefits.

Recent studies have employed machine-learning algorithms to predict exercise behaviour among young adults by integrating psychological and demographic variables. One investigation constructed comparative models—logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, naive Bayes, linear discriminant analysis, support vector machines, gradient-boosted decision trees and decision trees—to forecast physical activity levels. Results indicated that a logistic regression model combining measures of sports learning interest and autonomy support achieved the highest accuracy, recall and F1 scores, underscoring the value of simple, interpretable models in capturing behavioural determinants. This work demonstrates that data-driven frameworks can reliably identify motivational and environmental factors most predictive of sustained exercise, offering a scalable approach for early intervention and tailored support programmes.
