  • The SONAR trial showed that the endothelin receptor antagonist atrasentan improves kidney outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, though individual responses varied. Here the authors report exploratory analyses of the SONAR trial that identify urinary clusterin as a potential predictor of kidney disease progression and response atrasentan in type 2 diabetes.

  • Resource constraints and environmental impacts associated with current phosphorus fertilizer manufacture and use highlight considerable risks within global food production systems. Research portfolios targeted at existing soil phosphorus reserves might offer a solution.

  • Tree longevity is thought to increase in harsh environments, but global evidence of drivers is lacking. Here, the authors find two different pathways for tree longevity: slow growth in resource limited environments and increasing tree stature and/or slow growth in competitive environments.

  • The relationships that control seed production in trees are key to understand evolutionary pressures that have shaped forests. A global synthesis of fecundity data reveals that while seed production is not constrained by a strict size-number trade-off, it is influenced by taxonomy and nutrient allocation.

  • Silica particles induce intereukin-1 (IL-1) response to contribute to lung inflammation, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. Here the authors show that silica induces cell death and release of mitochondria and genomic DNA, which are sensed by STING with or without involving cGAS, respectively, for IL-1 induction and lung inflammation.

  • The results of a multi-decadal experimental study of the environmental consequences of chronic human-caused atmospheric nitrogen deposition are presented. Chronic low-level nitrogen addition led to a gradual loss of plant species diversity, but diversity recovered over the decade after cessation of nitrogen addition, suggesting that some of the harmful effects of past deposition can be reversed by reductions in the rate of deposition.
