Daisuke Ono et al. show that neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus from mice lacking VGAT or GAD65/67 exhibit burst firing patterns. These bursts are associated with large calcium spikes and did not affect circadian PER2 rhythms, suggesting an important role for hypothalamic GABA in refinement of circadian output rhythms in mice.
