Microbial metabolism amplified warming in three Phanerozoic hyperthermal events

Ancient hyperthermals witnessed a reduction in the transfer efficiency of particulate organic carbon from the surface to the deep ocean due to warming-driven increases in microbial metabolism, which may have amplified this ancient warming.

The onset of widespread marine red beds and the evolution of ferruginous oceans

The evolution of oceanic redox state in the past is poorly known. Here, the authors present a temporal record of banded iron formations and marine red beds, which indicate deep-ocean oxygenation occurred in the middle Ediacaran, coinciding with the onset of widespread marine red beds.

Brachiopods and forams reduced calcification costs through morphological simplification during mass extinction events

The authors assess shell thickness and ornamentation in brachiopods during the Permian–Triassic mass extinction (PTME) and in foraminifera during both the PTME and early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event, finding that both groups reduced their morphological complexity and thus possibly saved on energetic costs during these stressful events.

Permo–Triassic boundary carbon and mercury cycling linked to terrestrial ecosystem collapse

The environmental changes at the Permian–Triassic boundary are thought to have been caused primarily by volcanic eruptions. Here the authors develop a model to show that the loss of ecosystems on land and consequent massive terrestrial biomass oxidation triggered large biogeochemical changes in the oceans at the time of the marine mass extinction.

Six-fold increase of atmospheric pCO₂ during the Permian–Triassic mass extinction

The Permian–Triassic mass extinction was accompanied by a massive release of carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system, but the magnitude of change is not well known. Here, the authors present a new record of C₃ plants from southwestern China which shows that atmospheric pCO₂ increased by a factor of six during this event.
