Metabolic variation reflects dietary exposure in a multi-ethnic Asian population

In a large multi-ethnic Asian cohort, associations between over 1,000 plasma metabolites and specific foods and beverages are made. These diet–metabolite relationships were used to accurately predict clinical phenotypes such as diabetes and hypertension.

Haem-activated promiscuous targeting of artemisinin in Plasmodium falciparum

The mechanism of action of artemisinin, an antimalarial drug, is not well understood. Here, the authors use a labelled artemisinin analogue to show that the drug is mainly activated by haem and then binds covalently to over 120 proteins in the malaria parasite, affecting many of its cellular processes.

Generalized Brewster effect in dielectric metasurfaces

Devices with greater freedom are desired in nanophotonics. Here, the authors demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the generalized Brewster effect can be observed in an all-dielectric metasurface potentially for any angle, wavelength and polarization, due to electric and magnetic dipole interference.

Examining the replicability of online experiments selected by a decision market

This study finds that decision markets can be a useful tool for selecting studies for replication. For a sample of 26 online experiments published in PNAS selected by a decision market, the authors find replication rates ranging between 54% and 62%.
