STIM1-Mitofusin2 interactions tether mitochondria and melanosome contacts that promote melanosome maturation

Mitochondria communicate with other organelles to support specialized cellular functions. Here, the authors show that mitochondria form dynamic contact sites with melanosomes via STIM1–MFN2 interactions, locally supplying ATP to promote melanosome maturation.

HMGA regulates the global chromatin state and neurogenic potential in neocortical precursor cells

In this study, the authors show that neocortical neural precursor cells exhibit progressively condensed chromatin as they lose neurogenic potential during development. Furthermore, the open chromatin state of early stage progenitors is regulated by the high mobility group A (HMGA) proteins.

Mitochondria-ER contacts are an organelle exchange site for lipids and ions, but their regulation is not well understood. Here, Isshin et al. find that RMDN3 transfers lipid radicals, generated by mtROS, from mitochondria to the ER at contact sites to reduce toxicity to the cell.

Slowly dividing neural progenitors are an embryonic origin of adult neural stem cells

Furutachi et al. identified a slowly dividing subpopulation of embryonic progenitors that later gives rise to most adult neural stem cells (NSCs) in the subependymal zone. Moreover, they found that p57 is responsible for the slow cell cycle of this embryonic population and acts causally in the emergence of adult NSCs.
