Surprisingly, both ground uplift and seismicity rates fell in the days before the eruption, revealing how crustal rheology and stress release interact to govern pre-eruption signals. At Mount Nyiragongo, a May 2021 flank eruption began without measurable precursors; instead, edifice rupture triggered a shallow dyke intrusion beneath adjacent cities, underscoring challenges in forecasting at open-vent volcanoes. High-resolution drone-towed magnetic surveys across Iceland’s Bárðarbunga rift have now imaged a previously unmapped, east–northeast fault that coincides with major fissure alignments, demonstrating how buried structural fabrics channel dyke propagation and control lava-flow paths during large fissure eruptions.
