In a second investigation of four major US cities, researchers demonstrate that behavioural changes during the COVID-19 pandemic led to a 15–30 per cent decrease in the income diversity of urban encounters. Although overall movement volumes rebounded by late 2021, the willingness to explore unfamiliar places remained subdued, prolonging reduced mixing across socioeconomic groups and signalling lasting impacts on urban inclusion.
