Summary
Agricultural mechanization has evolved from simple hand tools to a diverse array of scale-appropriate machinery designed for smallholder plots. In many low- and middle-income regions, mechanization is driven by rising labour costs, demographic shifts and policy incentives. Equipment ranging from two-wheel tractors and motorised pumps to mechanised planters and harvesters can enhance labour productivity, reduce drudgery and improve timeliness of field operations. However, the adoption of machinery by smallholders depends on access to finance, infrastructure, knowledge and service markets. Mechanisation can boost yields and household incomes, but it also raises concerns about soil compaction, biodiversity loss, greenhouse-gas emissions and widening inequalities. To reconcile productivity and sustainability objectives, integrated approaches are needed that combine technological innovation with institutional support, skills training and inclusive business models. Across sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America, tailored mechanisation strategies are increasingly recognised as central to resilient smallholder farming systems and rural development.

Power tiller: A two-wheeled, engine-driven implement used for primary tillage, land preparation and inter-row cultivation on small plots.
