Clinical investigations span acute settings—such as dental clinics and intensive care units—to chronic disorders including insomnia and postoperative recovery. These interventions offer global relevance due to their low cost, minimal adverse effects and ease of integration into holistic care, yet standardisation of dosing and rigorous trial design remain essential for widespread adoption.

A 2024 cluster-randomised, controlled trial in dental practices assessed single and blended vapours—orange (Citrus sinensis), Swiss pine (Pinus cembra) and multi-component formulations—against a water control. While overall reductions in state anxiety were modest, significant benefits emerged for female patients and those with elevated trait anxiety, highlighting the importance of patient stratification. These findings demonstrate the translational potential of aroma delivery devices and underscore the need for further work on dose–response relationships and combined sensory modalities.
