Summary

Clinical psychology is the scientific discipline concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, formulation and treatment of psychological disorders, as well as the prevention of mental health problems and the promotion of wellbeing. Practitioners draw on research in psychopathology, developmental psychology and neuroscience to understand emotional distress, maladaptive behaviour and underlying neurocognitive processes. Core activities include psychometric assessment, case formulation, evidence-based intervention and outcome monitoring. Major theoretical orientations encompass cognitive–behavioural, psychodynamic, humanistic and systemic frameworks, all of which may be combined in an eclectic or transdiagnostic approach. In recent decades the field has expanded to include digital delivery of psychological care (telepsychology and smartphone-based interventions), trauma-informed practice, resilience promotion and stepped-care models. Professional training emphasises both scientific rigour and clinical expertise, and licensed practitioners must keep abreast of evolving empirical findings to ensure ethical, effective and culturally sensitive services.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Real-time monitoring of physiological and psychological responses in civilians exposed to conflict has demonstrated that wearable devices and mobile surveys can track acute elevations in stress markers—heart-rate variability, sleep disturbance and screen-time—in populations under missile threat, while indicating rapid recovery post-hostilities. Such platforms open the way to early-warning systems and targeted support in high-risk communities. Another large-scale longitudinal study in Japan employed repeated measures of the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale before and after COVID-19 vaccination, finding that immunisation yielded significant reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms, especially among individuals with elevated distress at baseline, suggesting that vaccination campaigns can confer measurable mental health benefits alongside physical protection.

Clinical Psychology publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in clinical psychology across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Evidence-based practice: Integration of the best available research with clinical expertise and patient values to guide care.

Clinical assessment: Systematic use of interviews, observation and psychometric instruments to evaluate psychological functioning and inform diagnosis and intervention.

Telepsychology: Delivery of psychological services via videoconferencing or digital platforms to improve access and continuity of care.

Trauma-informed care: An approach that recognises the prevalence and impact of trauma and seeks to avoid re-traumatisation by emphasising safety, choice and collaboration.

Cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT): A structured, time-limited psychotherapy that addresses the interplay between thought patterns, emotions and behaviours to alleviate psychological distress.
