Summary
Autobiographical memory encompasses the personal recollection of past experiences that shape our identity and inform our understanding of self. In schizophrenia spectrum disorders, this faculty is frequently disrupted, manifesting as reduced specificity, impaired temporal ordering and diminished thematic coherence. Patients often report overgeneral recall, recalling categories of events rather than discrete episodes, and struggle to integrate personal experiences into a unified life narrative. Underlying these difficulties are deficits in executive functions and hippocampal processing, as well as alterations in self‐reflection and narrative reasoning. Such impairments have profound consequences for social functioning, clinical insight and emotional regulation, hampering patients’ ability to learn from past experiences and anticipate future scenarios.
