Body-Oriented Psychotherapy for Schizophrenia Treatment

Summary

Schizophrenia is characterised by profound disruptions in perception, emotion and self-experience. Body-oriented psychotherapy integrates structured movement, posture work and tactile interventions to address the embodied dimension of psychosis. These approaches, which include body psychotherapy, dance/movement therapy and manualised movement programmes, aim to counteract experiential disembodiment by engaging patients in guided sensorimotor activities. Through regulated breathing, expressive movement and focused body awareness, participants may experience reductions in negative symptoms, improvements in emotional regulation and enhanced social connectedness. Mechanistic models propose that targeted sensorimotor feedback can recalibrate distorted body schema and strengthen self-coherence. While meta-analyses report moderate effect sizes for psychopathology and psychological distress, methodological heterogeneity and small sample sizes limit conclusive assertions. Nonetheless, positive outcomes in physical health, interoceptive awareness and functional mobility underscore the global relevance of these interventions as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy and conventional psychosocial care.
