Cognitive Emotion Regulation Mechanisms
Summary
Cognitive emotion regulation encompasses the processes by which individuals consciously modulate their emotional experiences and expressions using mental strategies. Broadly, these strategies fall into antecedent‐focused approaches—such as cognitive reappraisal, which alters the interpretation of a situation before an emotional response is fully generated—and response‐focused approaches, such as expressive suppression, which inhibit behavioural or physiological responses after emotions have arisen. Neurobiologically, regulation is supported by a network of prefrontal regions that exert top-down control over limbic structures, notably the amygdala, to attenuate or amplify affective responses. Recent advances have emphasised the dynamic interplay between distinct prefrontal subregions—including the lateral frontal pole, dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortices—and subcortical centres to enable flexible selection and switching of regulatory strategies in response to changing environmental demands. Understanding these mechanisms has profound implications for mental health, as dysregulated emotional control is a core feature of anxiety, depression and other affective disorders. Translational applications range from refining psychotherapeutic techniques to developing targeted neuromodulation and resilience training programmes.

Recent studies have characterised how individual differences in circuit excitability and connectivity underpin failures of emotion regulation in anxiety. In highly anxious participants, over‐excitable lateral frontal pole networks, as indexed by altered neurotransmitter balance, limit recruitment of this region during emotional action control. Instead, anxious individuals compensate by engaging dorsolateral and medial prefrontal areas, indicating a shift in regulatory architecture. This work reveals a neural bottleneck whereby even mild emotional challenges can saturate frontal pole capacity, driving reliance on alternative prefrontal circuits and highlighting circuit‐level vulnerabilities that may inform targeted interventions.
