Summary

Summer precipitation across East Asia exhibits pronounced decadal fluctuations, often manifesting as contrasting rainfall anomalies between northern and southern regions. These changes are governed by shifts in atmospheric circulation, sea surface temperature patterns and monsoon dynamics. A characteristic dipole pattern—where enhanced rainfall in the Yangtze River basin coincides with reduced rainfall in northern China—has recurred on multi-decadal timescales. This variability is linked to oceanic modes such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and regional tripole sea surface temperature anomalies. Teleconnection wave trains propagate moisture and energy across basins, modulating the intensity and position of the western Pacific subtropical high and the East Asian westerly jet. Volcanic forcing, anthropogenic aerosols and greenhouse-gas warming have all been shown to perturb these large-scale drivers, influencing decadal trends in the East Asian summer monsoon. Improved reconstructions and model simulations now offer clearer insights into the mechanisms that underlie past shifts in summer rainfall, enhancing our ability to predict future changes and to inform water-resource management and agricultural planning across the region.
