Summary
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition characterised by marked difficulty in acquiring and executing coordinated motor skills, affecting approximately 5–6% of school-aged children worldwide. Formal diagnosis typically relies on standardised motor proficiency tests—such as the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2—and comprehensive clinical evaluation that includes observations of daily activities. Recent advances in assessment employ quantitative motion analysis, eye-tracking and multi-domain profiles encompassing motor performance, sensory processing and executive function. Intervention strategies have evolved from general physiotherapy towards task-oriented and motor learning frameworks. Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance and Neuromotor Task Training emphasise goal setting, strategy use and repeated task practice. Emerging approaches integrate technology-assisted training, including virtual reality, exergaming and rhythmic auditory stimulation, tailored to individual profiles. Interdisciplinary models now address co-occurring deficits in attention, perception and psychosocial functioning, deploying personalised, context-based programmes. The overall aim is to enhance motor competence, promote self-efficacy and support participation across home, school and community settings, guided by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.

Moreover, modulation of speech rhythms in passive listening tasks reveals greater interference for children at risk, suggesting that rhythmic cueing engages core timing networks. These findings provide a mechanistic foundation for designing interventions that harness auditory-motor synchronization to improve motor timing and coordination in children with DCD.
