Summary

Surveillance using echocardiography, biomarkers and community-based cohort studies has improved understanding of risk factor trajectories. However, heterogeneity in diagnostic thresholds, variable reporting of incidence and scant data from under-represented populations continue to hamper global comparisons and targeted public health strategies.
