Economic Impacts of Population Aging

Population aging is reshaping economic structures worldwide by altering labour supply, public finances and consumption patterns. As the proportion of individuals aged 65 and over rises relative to the working‐age population, growth dynamics shift: labour participation may decline, while demands on health-care systems and pension schemes intensify. The old-age dependency ratio captures this demographic pressure, signalling how many retirees each worker must support. In many advanced economies, slower labour force growth has prompted a greater focus on human capital accumulation, automation and policies to extend working lives. At the same time, fiscal pressures mount as governments allocate larger shares of public spending to pensions and long-term care. In emerging markets, the speed of demographic transition often outpaces the development of social safety nets, challenging growth prospects. However, population aging can coincide with rising longevity and wealth accumulation, creating new markets for goods and services tailored to older consumers. The net effect on economic welfare depends on policy responses in areas such as retirement age reform, healthcare investment, labour market flexibility and productivity enhancement. Cross-country comparisons highlight that countries combining active-aging strategies with innovations in technology and financing tend to sustain more robust growth trajectories despite demographic headwinds.
