Summary
Emotion recognition is a core component of social communication and is frequently observed to be atypical in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A body of research has documented variable performance across modalities—facial expressions, vocal prosody and body language—and across developmental stages, pointing to both domain-general and modality-specific differences. While some autistic individuals display marked difficulties in identifying basic emotions such as happiness, sadness and anger, others show intact recognition under certain conditions or with compensatory strategies. Neurophysiological studies reveal altered patterns of neural activation and connectivity in regions involved in emotion processing, including the fusiform gyrus, insula and limbic structures. Recent theoretical accounts propose that both heightened sensory precision and reduced weighting of prior expectations, as described by Bayesian models, may underlie these differences. Understanding the mechanisms of emotion recognition in ASD has profound implications for early diagnosis, tailored interventions and broader insight into the neural basis of social cognition.

Recent studies employing dynamic point-light displays have shown that autistic adults possess more precise visual representations of others’ emotional expressions than non-autistic peers yet derive less benefit from this precision when matching expressions to emotion labels. In autistic participants, neither non-verbal reasoning nor the interaction between representation precision and matching ability predicted recognition accuracy, in contrast to non-autistic controls. These findings support computational models suggesting that altered integration of sensory evidence and prior information may contribute to emotion recognition challenges in ASD.
