Equine-Assisted Interventions in Mental Health Therapy

Summary

Equine-assisted interventions encompass a spectrum of therapeutic modalities in which horses serve as active collaborators in the treatment of psychological and behavioural disorders. These interventions range from therapeutic horseback riding and equine-facilitated learning to equine-assisted psychotherapy, each designed to harness the unique social, emotional and physical dynamics of human–horse interaction. Core mechanisms include the establishment of a therapeutic alliance through non-verbal communication, enhancement of emotional regulation via embodied activity, and promotion of self-efficacy through task-oriented engagement with the horse. Equine-assisted approaches have been trialled across diverse populations—veterans with trauma histories, at-risk adolescents, individuals with substance use disorders and youth with behavioural challenges—yielding promising reports of improved treatment adherence, reduced symptomatology and strengthened interpersonal skills. Despite growing acceptance in clinical settings, the field remains in an early stage of scientific development, with emerging evidence highlighting the importance of standardised protocols, precise definition of active ingredients and rigorous evaluation of long-term outcomes. Integration of equine-assisted modalities within multidisciplinary mental health services underscores their global relevance and potential as complementary therapies in contemporary practice.
