Equitable Global Health Partnerships and Education

Equitable global health partnerships bring together stakeholders from diverse regions and institutions to address shared health challenges through collaborative research, training and service delivery. Central to these alliances is mutual respect, shared decision-making and capacity building that redresses longstanding imbalances between high-income and low- or middle-income settings. Equitable education underpins such partnerships by fostering co-development of curricula, reciprocal exchanges of expertise and opportunities for learners from all contexts to engage meaningfully in research design, implementation and dissemination. Recent discourse has emphasised the need to confront power asymmetries manifest in authorship practices, funding mechanisms, leadership roles and knowledge production. Integrating decolonial perspectives has become essential to ensure that local priorities drive research agendas and that pedagogical approaches reflect cultural contexts. Practical applications range from jointly devised training modules and mentorship schemes to co-authored guidelines and locally led community interventions. Together, these efforts seek to transform global health from a one-way transfer of expertise into a genuinely bidirectional endeavour that advances health equity worldwide.

Capacity building: Activities and investments designed to strengthen the skills, competencies and organisational structures of individuals and institutions, enabling sustainable leadership and locally led research.

Power asymmetry: An imbalance in influence, resources or decision-making authority between partners, often reflecting historical, economic or geopolitical inequalities in global health collaborations.
