Summary
As populations age, sleep disturbances among older adults have emerged as a widespread issue with implications for physical, cognitive and emotional health. Exercise interventions have been explored as accessible, non-pharmacological approaches to enhance sleep quality, reduce insomnia symptoms and promote healthy ageing. These interventions vary in modality—from aerobic and resistance training to mind-body practices such as Tai chi—and are typically described by the FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type) principle. Potential mechanisms include regulation of circadian rhythms, reductions in inflammatory cytokines, modulation of endocrine responses and enhancement of neural plasticity. Evidence indicates that moderate-intensity exercise, performed regularly over periods of 12 weeks or more, can increase total sleep time, improve sleep efficiency and shorten sleep latency. Tailoring programmes to older adults’ functional capacities and addressing barriers such as comorbidities and environmental factors are crucial for real-world implementation.
