Summary
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, eight-phase psychotherapeutic approach designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories and other adverse life experiences. Grounded in the Adaptive Information Processing model, it posits that psychopathology arises when memories of disturbing events are inadequately processed and remain dysfunctionally stored. Through controlled bilateral stimulation—most commonly guided eye movements—EMDR facilitates the reprocessing of maladaptive memory networks, enabling clients to integrate cognitive, emotional and sensory information in a more adaptive form. The protocol begins with client history and preparation, proceeds through assessment, desensitisation and installation of positive cognitions, and concludes with a body scan, closure and reevaluation. Over the past two decades EMDR has demonstrated efficacy across a spectrum of conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. It has been adapted for individual, group and remote delivery, extending its reach to diverse populations in low-resource and conflict-affected settings. Recent innovations include group formats that employ art‐based elements, remote videoconference delivery to overcome geographical barriers, and integration with other modalities to address complex comorbidities. As international guidelines increasingly endorse EMDR, ongoing research seeks to refine mechanisms of action, optimise delivery in digital health platforms and broaden its application to emerging global crises.
