Family-Centered Self-Management in Type 2 Diabetes Care
Summary
Family-centred self-management in type 2 diabetes integrates patients with their familial caregivers to enhance daily management of diet, exercise, medication and glucose monitoring. By embedding structured education and support within the family context, interventions aim to bolster self-efficacy, adherence and psychosocial well-being. This model recognises that family members can facilitate health-behaviour change through practical assistance, emotional encouragement and shared goal-setting, while also understanding and addressing barriers such as health literacy, cultural norms and socioeconomic constraints. Emerging evidence underscores the global relevance of family involvement in improving glycaemic control, reducing complications and sustaining lifestyle adjustments, particularly in resource-limited settings. Approaches range from face-to-face counselling and community workshops to digital tools that engage both patients and relatives, reflecting a trend towards personalised, collaborative care pathways that extend beyond clinical encounters.
Research from Nature Portfolio
A pilot randomised trial tested a family-based diabetes self-management education and support programme grounded in social cognitive theory in Western Ethiopia. Dyads of patients and family caregivers received a structured, theory-driven curriculum over multiple sessions, which led to substantial improvements in both the support received by patients and positive supportive behaviours among family members. Effect sizes over 0.8 were observed in perceived support at follow-up, and caregivers demonstrated greater consistency in constructive involvement. These findings suggest that culturally adapted, family-centred education can significantly enhance support dynamics and may be scalable to similar low-resource contexts.
