Family and Household Studies

Family and household studies encompass multidisciplinary research into the structures, processes and lived experiences of kinship, co-residence and caregiving. Investigations range from the dynamics of parenting, sibling and intergenerational ties to patterns of cohabitation, separation and single-parenting. Central themes include the negotiation of resources and responsibilities within households; the impact of economic, cultural and policy contexts on family formation and well-being; and the psychological and developmental trajectories of individuals embedded in familial networks. Recent demographic shifts—rising divorce rates, delayed childbearing, diverse family forms and transnational migration—have prompted renewed attention to how families adapt to structural change, maintain social support and shape individual outcomes. Digital technologies and global mobility further reconfigure how intimacies and obligations are sustained across time and space. Together, this work illuminates the reciprocal influences between families and broader social systems, informing public policy, social services and community interventions to foster resilience and equity in domestic life.

Analyses of parenting styles have extended into online behaviour. A 2024 study of Chinese adolescents found that higher perceived parental emotional warmth predicts greater prosocial conduct on the Internet via enhanced gratitude, with the indirect effect most pronounced among youths holding a weaker belief in a just world. This work demonstrates how family affective climates shape adaptive digital citizenship. A separate inquiry into children born during the Covid-19 stay-at-home orders assessed psycho-motor outcomes in pre-schoolers. Findings revealed widespread delays in fine-motor and language-cognitive domains among two- to five-year-olds, and showed that greater paternal participation in daily childcare was associated with improved developmental profiles, underscoring the protective role of involved fatherhood during periods of societal disruption.

Psycho-motor development: The integrated progression of cognitive processes and motor skills that enable coordinated movement and sensory–motor tasks.

Father involvement: The degree and quality of a father’s engagement in caregiving, play and educational support of his child.

Household chaos: The extent of disorganisation, noise and unpredictability in a home setting, reflecting inconsistent routines and high ambient stimulation.
