Family-Friendly Policies and Employee Well-Being

Summary

Family-friendly policies encompass a range of workplace initiatives designed to help employees manage professional and domestic responsibilities. These measures include parental leave, flexible working hours, telecommuting options, on-site or subsidised childcare, and eldercare support. By alleviating work–family conflict, such policies contribute to improved mental health, heightened job satisfaction, reduced turnover intentions and enhanced organisational commitment. Evidence suggests that employees who perceive genuine support for their caregiving roles experience lower stress levels and report greater engagement. Key mechanisms include increased autonomy over scheduling, stronger supervisory backing and a clear signalling of organisational values. Across diverse cultural and regulatory contexts, the adoption and design of these policies vary, but the underlying aim remains consistent: to foster a sustainable balance between career demands and family life.
