Family Functioning Assessment in Adolescent Mental Health

Summary

Family functioning refers to the patterns of interaction, communication and emotional bonding that underlie a family’s capacity to meet the developmental and psychological needs of its members. In adolescents, robust assessment of family functioning is critical for understanding the onset and maintenance of mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression and behavioural problems. A range of validated instruments, including both process-oriented and result-oriented models, are employed to gauge facets such as cohesion, adaptability and support. These assessments inform clinical decision making by identifying specific family dynamics that either protect against or exacerbate adolescent distress. Across diverse cultural settings, studies have linked high levels of family cohesion and clear communication to lower rates of self-harm and mood disorders in young people. Conversely, poor adaptability and chronic conflict predict greater risk of emotional dysregulation and externalising behaviours. Advances in digital and multi-informant assessment platforms enable clinicians to integrate parent, adolescent and teacher reports, offering a multidimensional picture of family health. Such comprehensive evaluation guides targeted family-based interventions, from psychoeducational programmes to systemic therapy, with the aim of reinforcing adaptive patterns and mitigating risk for long-term psychopathology.
