Family Quality of Life in Families with Disabilities
Summary
Family quality of life (FQoL) encompasses the collective well-being of family units that include one or more members with a disability. This multidimensional concept integrates subjective satisfaction across emotional, material, social and support domains, recognising the reciprocal influences between individual needs and family dynamics. Research has highlighted how factors such as socioeconomic status, access to services, cultural context and family cohesion shape outcomes. Interventions have evolved from individual-centred approaches to holistic models that empower family members through skills training, peer-support networks and inclusive policy frameworks. Measurement of FQoL relies on standardised instruments that facilitate both cross-cultural comparison and evaluation of interventions. Understanding the complex interactions between individual impairments, family resources and environmental barriers is crucial to promoting resilience, informing service delivery and shaping inclusive social policies worldwide.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of parent-implemented interventions in improving both child and family outcomes. In a randomised controlled trial among families of children with autism spectrum disorder, parents received structured training in therapeutic techniques and applied these within home routines. The intervention group showed significant gains in children’s social communication skills and reported higher family satisfaction compared with the control group. These findings underscore the potential of capacity-building approaches that leverage parental involvement as a sustainable complement to clinical services, with implications for scaling community-based support in diverse cultural settings.
