Functional Communication and Behavior Intervention Strategies

Functional communication and behaviour intervention strategies centre on understanding and altering the purpose that challenging behaviours serve for individuals, often in educational, clinical or community settings. By systematically assessing antecedents, behaviours and consequences, practitioners identify the specific reinforcers that maintain problem behaviour. Functional communication training then replaces maladaptive responses with alternative communicative acts that serve the same function, supported by extinction of the undesired response and reinforcement of the new, appropriate behaviour. Contemporary approaches increasingly integrate trauma-informed principles, sensory and vision assessments, and data-driven decision-making to tailor interventions. Interventions range from antecedent-based modifications—such as environmental adjustments or schedule thinnings—to consequence-based techniques including extinction, differential reinforcement, and schedule-correlated visual signals. This suite of strategies has global relevance, yielding reductions in self-injury, aggression and elopement among diverse populations, while promoting skill acquisition and quality of life.
