Summary

Systemic elevations of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α, promote endothelial dysfunction and accelerate atherogenesis, while disrupting neurotransmitter metabolism and neuroplasticity. Concurrently, altered platelet activation and adhesion-molecule expression exacerbate thromboinflammatory processes, linking mood disturbance to heightened vascular risk. In the central nervous system, microglial activation and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier permit peripheral immune mediators to perturb neuronal circuits governing mood and cognition. Autonomic imbalance further amplifies inflammatory cascades, creating a bidirectional interface between emotional and cardiovascular health. Understanding these convergent pathways is critical for devising targeted interventions that address both depression and vascular comorbidity.
