Integrated Pediatric Mental Health Care

Integrated pediatric mental health care encompasses the systematic incorporation of psychological and psychiatric expertise into primary and specialty paediatric services. This model seeks to overcome fragmentation by enabling early identification, timely intervention and seamless follow-up within settings familiar to families. Core components include interprofessional collaboration between paediatricians, mental health specialists, nursing staff and allied professionals; routine screening for emotional and behavioural difficulties; shared treatment planning; and data-driven tracking of outcomes. The overarching aim is to deliver comprehensive, family-centred care that addresses biological, psychological and social determinants of child mental health. Integrated approaches have been shown to enhance access to treatment, reduce stigma, improve continuity and optimise resource utilisation. Implementation strategies vary from co-located services to virtual consultation and stepped-care algorithms, but all share a commitment to embedding mental health expertise in the front line of paediatric practice. This global paradigm shift recognises that children’s emotional well-being is inseparable from physical health and that early, coordinated support can alter life-long trajectories.

Medical home: A continuous and comprehensive primary care model that is family-centred, coordinated across specialists and supportive of the patient’s holistic needs.
