Summary
Intellectual functioning and mental health intersect in complex ways across different demographic, cultural and clinical groups. Intellectual functioning refers to the spectrum of cognitive abilities such as reasoning, problem-solving and adaptive behaviour, and variations in these domains influence vulnerability to psychiatric disorders, developmental trajectories and social participation. Borderline intellectual functioning, typically defined by an intelligence quotient between 70 and 85, often co-occurs with anxiety, mood and behavioural disorders, yet remains under-recognised in many classification systems. Neurobiological studies point to alterations in brain connectivity and regional development, particularly within circuits governing executive functions and emotional regulation. Equally important are environmental factors: early life adversity, socioeconomic deprivation and limited educational support can exacerbate cognitive difficulties and elevate the risk of mental health problems. By contrast, resilience factors—including targeted interventions, family scaffolding and community inclusion—can mitigate these risks and promote adaptive outcomes.
