Summary
Regular intensive physical activity undertaken by elite and recreational athletes confers measurable advantages to both lifespan and healthspan. Strenuous training enhances cardiovascular function, metabolic efficiency and musculoskeletal resilience, resulting in fewer premature deaths from heart disease, cancer and other chronic conditions. Epidemiological evidence demonstrates that endurance athletes typically experience the greatest reduction in all-cause mortality, while those in power sports exhibit more modest cardiometabolic gains. Mechanistic studies indicate that sustained exercise moderates systemic inflammation, improves endothelial function and promotes beneficial lipid and glucose profiles, thereby underpinning the longevity effect.
