Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities in Children

Mental health and developmental disabilities encompass a spectrum of cognitive, behavioural and emotional conditions that emerge in childhood and persist into adolescence and adulthood. Intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are among the most prevalent, often co-occurring and affecting learning, social interaction and daily functioning. Early identification and multidisciplinary interventions—spanning behavioural therapies, educational support and family-centred care—have been shown to improve long-term outcomes. Advances in epidemiological surveillance have revealed rising diagnostic rates in many regions, reflecting both genuine increases and enhanced detection. Global research highlights disparities in prevalence, with under-resourced settings facing considerable challenges in assessment and service provision. Furthermore, parental mental health and socio-economic context are recognised as critical determinants of child well-being, underscoring the need for integrated models of care. Ongoing studies are refining our understanding of genetic and environmental risk factors, neurodevelopmental trajectories and optimal intervention strategies, with the ultimate aim of reducing functional impairment and enhancing quality of life for affected children and their families.
