Mental Health Impacts during Infectious Disease Outbreaks

Summary

Infectious disease outbreaks exert profound effects on psychological well-being worldwide. During pandemics such as SARS, H1N1 and COVID-19, elevated rates of anxiety, depression, stress and post-traumatic symptoms have been widely reported. Public health measures including quarantine, social distancing and lockdowns disrupt social support networks, daily routines and economic stability, exacerbating mental health challenges. Fear of contagion and concerns about personal and family health often interact with media exposure, leading to heightened vigilance or panic. Yet research also highlights resilience and adaptive coping strategies, with many individuals recovering as restrictions ease. Vulnerable groups—including those with pre-existing psychiatric conditions, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, healthcare workers and those living alone—experience sustained distress. Targeted interventions such as cognitive-behavioural support, peer-led networks and workplace well-being programmes have shown promise in alleviating distress and restoring functioning. Globally, informing policy with evidence on mental health trajectories, risk factors and protective factors can guide resource allocation and the design of supportive services during current and future outbreaks.
