Monsoon Climate Variability Prediction Techniques

Summary

Monsoon climate variability exerts a profound influence on water resources, agriculture and hazard management across tropical and subtropical regions. Prediction techniques encompass a spectrum ranging from physics-based dynamical models that solve atmosphere–ocean equations to empirical and statistical schemes that exploit historical relationships among rainfall, sea-surface temperatures and wind fields. Hybrid frameworks integrate machine-learning algorithms with traditional models to identify optimal predictors and construct large ensembles, enhancing forecast skill and reducing systematic biases. Advances in ocean initialisation, data assimilation and coupled feedback representation have steadily improved seasonal hindcasts and real-time outlooks. Teleconnection indices such as El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the Indian Ocean Dipole remain central to many approaches, while emerging methods draw on objective predictor selection and classification schemes to tackle non-stationarity. Ensemble forecasting and multi-model intercomparison exercises further refine probabilistic estimates, underpinning early warning systems and decision support for agriculture, water management and disaster preparedness.

A novel merged machine-learning and large-ensemble approach has demonstrated skillful seasonal prediction of Afro-Asian summer monsoon precipitation by identifying key atmospheric and external predictors linked to low-level wind anomalies. The technique organises selected predictors into ensembles based on sample size, independence and extremity criteria, yielding correlation improvements of up to 0.90 and substantial error reductions relative to conventional models. An objective prediction method employing multinomial logistic regression has been developed to forecast summer precipitation patterns over eastern China. By selecting predictors through a machine-learning-guided collinearity assessment, the model achieves classification accuracies of 60–70 percent and exhibits robust performance compared with single-predictor schemes. A comprehensive assessment of twelve dynamical seasonal models for South Asia highlights spatial variability in forecast skill, with highest proficiency where El Niño teleconnections dominate. Findings endorse a weighted multi-model ensemble strategy that excludes poorly performing systems at the national level, thereby enhancing regional monsoon outlooks.
